01 / Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?
No. NJ gives you the right to see a physical therapist directly, no doctor's visit required first. If your specific insurance plan does require a referral, we will tell you right away and walk you through the fastest way to get one. The majority of our patients come in without a referral and have no issues with coverage.
02 / Do I need a prescription from my doctor first?
No. New Jersey's Direct Access Law lets you receive physical therapy treatment from a licensed physical therapist without a referral from a licensed health care professional. There is no script to collect and nothing to fax before you are evaluated. Call the office and book a time.
03 / What if my insurance plan requires a referral anyway?
Some plans still require one. That is a coverage rule, not state law, and the two get confused constantly. When we verify your benefits before your first visit, we check for that requirement specifically. If your plan needs a referral, you hear it from us before you come in, along with the fastest way to get one.
04 / Will my insurance cover treatment?
We are in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare and the commercial plans most people in Denville carry. Before your first visit, we verify your exact benefits so you know what to expect, no guessing, no surprises when the bill arrives. Call us with your insurance card and we will check your coverage on the spot, usually in under five minutes.
05 / Does Medicare cover physical therapy here?
Yes. Medicare is one of the seventeen carriers we are in-network with. Coverage details still vary by plan type, so call the office with your card and we will confirm what yours covers before your first visit rather than after it.
06 / What if I have no insurance, or my benefits are used up?
We offer self-pay plans for patients who are uninsured or who have exhausted their benefits. Typically, small, privately-owned practices like Carroll Physical Therapy have lower contracted in-network rates when compared to large corporate-owned health companies. If the cost is a genuine hardship, our office manager will work with you to create a payment plan.
07 / What should I expect at my first visit?
Your first visit is a full one-on-one evaluation with a licensed physical therapist, not a quick intake before someone hands you a printout. Your therapist takes a complete history, assesses how your body moves, identifies exactly where the problem is originating, and explains what is going on in plain language. You leave with a specific treatment plan and a clear answer to the question you have been carrying around: why does it keep hurting?
08 / What should I wear and bring?
Wear clothes you can move in and sneakers, because the evaluation involves actually moving. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID. If you have had imaging or surgery for this problem and you have a copy of the report, bring that too. It saves a step.
09 / How often will I come in, and can I get here before work?
Both locations open at 5:00 AM Monday through Friday, so you can be treated and still be at your desk on time. Visit frequency depends on your condition, how long you have had it, and your goals, but most patients start at two to three times per week and taper as they improve. After your evaluation, your therapist gives you a realistic timeline and visit estimate. We do not keep you coming longer than you need to, and we do not pad your plan to fill a schedule.
10 / What are the hours at each location?
Denville and Mountain Lakes keep the same hours: Monday to Thursday from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Both locations are reached on the same number, (973) 366-1600.
11 / Which location should I go to, Denville or Mountain Lakes?
Whichever one fits your day. Denville is at 3155 Route 10 East, Suite 112. Mountain Lakes is at 333 Route 46 W, Suite 104. Both are staffed by licensed physical therapists, both open at 5:00 AM, and both run the same one-on-one model. Tell us which is easier to reach and we will schedule you there.
12 / How soon will I feel results?
Most patients notice a meaningful difference within the first three to four sessions, not a complete resolution, but enough of a change that they know something real is happening. We track your progress objectively at every visit, measuring how you move, not just asking how you feel. If something is not working, we change it immediately. You will never spend twelve sessions on a plan that stopped producing results after four.
13 / What if physical therapy has already failed me somewhere else?
That is one of the most common reasons people come to us, and it usually traces back to one thing: nobody told you what was actually wrong. If your last round of physical therapy was a list of exercises handed over by an aide, the treatment went where it hurt instead of where it started. Your evaluation here begins by finding the cause, and you leave able to explain it yourself. Bring the exercises you were given last time. They tell us a lot.
