Spinal Manipulation in Denville

Safe, controlled manual techniques to improve spinal joint mobility and neurological function, performed by physical therapists with advanced manual therapy credentials.

A stiff segment is a mechanical problem. This is the mechanical fix.

Spinal manipulation is a specific, quick, controlled movement applied to a spinal joint that is not moving the way it should. It is not a full-body adjustment, and it is not something you need on a standing schedule for the rest of your life. It is one technique, aimed at one segment, chosen because the examination found that segment restricted.

The immediate effect is mechanical: the joint moves further and the muscles guarding it let go. There is a neurological effect as well, which is why pain often eases before strength changes. That window is the point. We use it to get the movement and loading work done that keeps the segment moving on its own.

Aimed at the segment the exam identified, not the whole spine
Paired with exercise in the same visit, so the motion holds
Explained to you before it happens, including what it will feel like

Best for stiffness that has stopped responding to stretching.

You can stretch a joint all morning and have it lock up again by the afternoon. When that happens, the segment is not short of length. It is short of motion. That is what manipulation is for.

Segment by Segment Exam

Your therapist tests each level by hand and through movement to find which segments are genuinely restricted and which are only sore. Manipulation is used where the exam supports it, and screened out where it is not appropriate for you.

The Technique

Careful positioning, then a small, quick, controlled movement. You may hear a pop, which is gas moving inside the joint, not bones cracking or being put back in place. Dan Carroll, PT, FAAOMPT, completed an AAOMPT credentialed manual therapy fellowship, and Dr. Dan Streeter, PT, DPT, COMT, is certified in orthopaedic manual therapy.

Use the New Motion

New range is a window, not a result. The rest of the visit is spent moving and loading that segment so your body keeps the motion instead of tightening back down on the drive home.

Motion back, and a reason it stays back.

Manipulation is one tool inside a plan. Used with exercise, it gets you to real range sooner and keeps you from needing the same technique over and over.

Immediate Range of Motion

A restricted segment moves further right away, which is often the first honest evidence that the problem is mechanical and fixable.

Less Muscle Guarding

Muscles stop bracing around a joint once the joint moves again, so the ache that came from holding yourself stiff settles down too.

Easier Everyday Positions

Turning to reverse the car, reaching a seatbelt, sitting through a meeting, and getting out of bed in the morning stop being the hard parts of the day.

No Standing Appointment

You are not signed up for an indefinite schedule of adjustments. The goal is a segment that holds its own motion, then a discharge plan.
