A sudden load on tissue that was not braced for it.
A rear-end collision moves your head faster than the muscles holding it can respond, which is why whiplash produces neck pain, stiffness, and headaches that often peak a day or two later. A lift gone wrong, a slip on a loading dock, or years of the same repeated motion at work loads the spine the same way: herniated and bulging discs, radiculopathy where the disc or joint irritates a nerve root, and strains that never fully settle because you went straight back to the task that caused them.
The trap in both cases is time. Pain quiets down enough to get through the day, motion never fully comes back, and the injury becomes a chronic problem months later. We test what is actually irritated, tell you whether your arm or leg symptoms are coming from a nerve or from muscle, and give you a straight answer about what you can safely do at work in the meantime.
The billing side is genuinely simpler here than most people expect. Carroll Physical Therapy is in-network with Motor Vehicle Insurance, Horizon Casualty, The Hartford, and One Call, the carriers and networks that handle auto and workers compensation claims in New Jersey. That means treatment is billed to your claim, not to you, and our office manager verifies your benefits before the first visit as a courtesy.
What we see after a collision or an injury on the job.
Some of it starts the same day. Some of it shows up a week later, which does not make it less real.
Whiplash Neck Pain and Stiffness
Neck pain and guarding after a collision, often with headaches at the base of the skull and difficulty turning to check a blind spot.
Arm or Leg Numbness and Tingling
Pins and needles, burning, or weakness travelling down a limb, the signature of radiculopathy from an irritated nerve root.
Pain with Bending and Lifting
Sharp low back pain loading forward or lifting from the floor, typical of a herniated or bulging disc under compression.
Pain That Started a Day Later
You felt fine at the scene, then woke up stiff and sore. Delayed onset is normal after a collision and worth getting looked at.
Repetitive Strain from the Job
Shoulder, wrist, or low back pain built from the same motion thousands of times, which no amount of rest on the weekend fixes.
No Confidence Returning to Work
Cleared on paper but unsure whether your back or shoulder will hold up to the lifting, climbing, or driving the job requires.
Calm the irritated tissue, then rebuild for the job.
First we work out what is driving the pain, and specifically whether a nerve is involved, because that changes everything about the plan. Hands-on work restores the motion the injury took away, whether that is a guarded neck after whiplash or a lumbar segment that has shut down. Directional loading and nerve mobility work settle disc-related symptoms and pull them back out of the arm or leg.
Then rehab gets specific to your work. Lifting from floor height, overhead reaching, carrying, climbing, prolonged driving or standing: whatever your day requires, we load it in the clinic before you are asked to do it under a deadline. That is what makes a return to work stick, and it is what stops a claim from turning into a chronic problem you carry for years.

What our patients say.
"For over a year I had pain and very little mobility in my neck which made it difficult to drive. I went to Carroll Physical Therapy in Denville and worked with Dan Streeter."Barbara P. · Google Review
