Joint Pain in Denville

One joint or several, in the hand or the hip. A joint hurts when the load going through it is more than it can currently handle. We find out which half of that equation changed, and we tell you which one it was.

The joint that hurts is often not the joint that failed.

No joint works alone. Every one of them borrows motion and control from the joints above and below it. When a stiff hip stops contributing, the knee absorbs the difference. When the mid-back stops rotating, the shoulder pays for it. The joint that complains first is usually the one that got handed work it was never built to do.

That is why an image showing wear in one joint rarely explains the whole story, and why treating only the sore spot buys a few quiet weeks. We examine the painful joint and the joints feeding into it, sort out what is stiff, what is weak, and what your body has stopped controlling, then tell you in plain language which of the three is driving your pain.

What your joint does tells us why it hurts.

When the pain shows up, what makes it worse, and how the joint behaves after rest all point at a cause. Bring us the pattern and we can usually narrow it before we lay a hand on you.

Morning Stiffness

The joint feels locked when you first get up and loosens once you have been moving for a while.

Swelling or Warmth

Puffiness around the joint line, sometimes with heat, that comes up after activity and settles overnight.

Grinding or Catching

A gritty feeling, a click, or a joint that catches partway through a movement and then releases.

Pain With Weight or Grip

Stairs, standing up from a chair, opening a jar, or carrying groceries provoke the joint more than rest does.

Several Joints at Once

Pain that moves from one joint to another, or the same joint on both sides, which changes what we test and who else you may need to see.

Guarding and Giving Way

You stop trusting the joint, so you unload it. The muscles around it get weaker, and the joint gets less tolerant still.

Move what is stiff. Load what is weak.

Joint pain care at Carroll Physical Therapy starts with an exam of the painful joint and the joints feeding into it. Your physical therapist tests motion, strength, and control in each one, then tells you which finding explains your symptoms before any treatment begins.

Manual therapy restores the motion the exam flagged. Corrective exercise rebuilds the strength and control the joint needs to hold that motion under real load. Soft tissue work settles the muscle guarding that has built up around the joint. Every joint in the body gets the same three questions asked of it: what is stiff, what is weak, what is uncontrolled.

No referral needed. Most insurances accepted. Doors open at 5:00 AM, so you can be seen before work.

From a joint you protect to a joint you trust.

Settle the Joint Down

Hands-on work, activity adjustments you can actually live with, and a plain explanation of what is irritated. The first thing that changes is how the joint feels day to day.

Give the Joint Its Motion Back

We open up the restrictions in the joint and in the ones above and below it, so the painful joint stops covering for something else.

Load It Until It Holds

Then we condition the muscle that supports the joint and progress the load toward stairs, lifting, or your sport, so the pattern that caused this does not rebuild itself.
